How is the program funded?

Funding for the ASSURE (Animal Science Summer Undergraduate Research Experience) program is provided by a grant from the USDA-NIFA AFRI Education and Workforce Development (United States Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture, Agriculture and Food Research Initiative).

 

How many students can participate?

Each year we can support 10 students for a total of 5 years.

 

How are participants selected?

We will evaluate applicants on research interest statement, previous experiences, letter of recommendation, completed coursework presented in transcript(s), and the potential contribution of participation to your academic and professional development. After an initial review, 15-minute interviews will be scheduled.

 

Is this a paid research training program?

Yes, each student will receive a $5,500 stipend during the summer.

 

Who is eligible to apply?

NC State Animal Science majors who are entering their sophomore or junior years are eligible. Students who are graduating this coming spring or summer are not eligible to apply.

 

Must I be a United States citizen or permanent resident?

Yes, to be eligible for USDA funding, you must be a US citizen or permanent resident (you have a green card).

 

Is there an application fee?

No, there is no fee to apply to the ASSURE program.

 

When do students find out if they’ve been accepted into the ASSURE program?

The ASSURE team will notify selected participants by email on or before December 1st and students have until December 15th to accept or decline the offer.

 

What are the typical work hours?

Hours are determined by your research mentor and your project. You should plan on putting in a minimum of eight hours each day. There are no concrete start or end times.

 

Is the starting date flexible?

Neither the start nor the end date are flexible. Students who agree to participate in the program must complete the Spring 8-week Safety and Ethics course, participate in 2 lab rotations, and complete the full 12-week summer research program.

 

Can I take classes while I am participating in the program?

No, the program is a full-time commitment.
